 Mise-en-scene

The mise en scene in music video focuses on lighting, props, hair, costume, makeup, location and colour. These elements depend on the genre of the music video and the style. In our video mise en scene is used to represent each character. For the mise en scene of our video we have kept the settings dark, the characters are dressed up in dark outfits, the colour grading will also be kept drey and dark. for flashback we shot in a park where the greenery and sun shining represents the happy moment.

Equipment

Camera: Canon Eos 1300D (T6) with 18-55 lens

Phone: Iphone 14 pro max and Iphone 15 pro

Our original plan was to film on the camera, however the camera didn't have enough options to film in a dark room so we had to film the present day scenes using the iphones, we filmed the flashbacks using the camera since camera had less stability it gave a good effect to the flashback part.

Tripod: We did not require a tripod as it records a very still shot which was not required for our video as they are not engaging. We practiced camera movements before the shoot day so that we can get good angles along with smooth movement. As its not easy to move the tripod around we did not use it.

Lights: We used an led light for the indoor shoot which was only needed for the first classroom scene in the other scenes the natural lighting was enough for us and max iso.

Costumes: We were required 4 costumes for each character as there were 4 diff scenes so each scene required a different getup.
Flashback part: the actors would wear vibrant and childish clothes to represent the older time.
Current day: the actors were wearing dark and grey clothes to sense loneliness.
Fight scene: the supporting role wears red to represent aggression and grey for the main lead.

Props:

Hair and makeup:
Both actors did their hair and makeup on their own according to the scenes.

Shoot permissions

We had to shoot a few scenes at a school so for it to be easier we decided to shoot such scenes at our own school which our school management wasn't allowing us since we had to bring an actor from outside, however, after much convincing they gave us the permission to shoot. For the other scenes we did not need any permission since they were public spaces.

Location 1: International maarif school, islamabad (16 jan 2025)

INTERIOR CLASSROOM

>The first day of our shoot also a very stressful one since it was a normal day at school there were other students present as well. After revising the script and storyboard and checking the camera we were all set to start the shoot. We started from the first classroom scene where we initially planned to film on the camera. However the camera did not have the stability and enough iso so it was not fit for the setting of the classroom. we shifted from camera to phone using cinematic mode which gave us better quality and more stability. For the classroom scene we needed more students in the background to make it look like a classroom so we called students from our common room and they sat in the background.

> We took long shot in the starting scene to show the settings of the environment then we took a midshot to show the character's expressions and mood. To show the character anxious and feeling left out we took closeup shots of her shaking feet and fidgeting pen in her hand. Long shot when other students leave the classroom. We took a panning shot when the character gets up to leave the classroom.

INTERIOR HALLWAY

> Our next scene was in the hallway in which i had to act myself so i couldn't check how the shot was turning out so my partner had to ensure the right angles on her own. It was quite a task for me to ensure that the other actress had the right expressions along with my own expressions as we were only a group of two, so we had to take multiple shots with many retakes.

> The hallway scene was about the main character making eye contact with her ex bestfriend while she is leaving to go to the garden.

> For the hallway scene we had to take multiple different shots with different angles as the expressions of both actresses had to be captured to show how one is insecure and the other is least bothered. Firstly we took a tracking shot where the camera follow the main character. Then my partner took over the shoulder of main character to capture the supporting role's expression. OTS of supporting character along with dollying capture main leads expression. Lastly, a still midshot taken for the transition from hallway to garden.

EXERIOR SCHOOL GARDEN

> For the character siting alone in the garden scene, we transitioned it from the hallway scene. In this scene the main character goes and sits in the garden all by herself now that she had eye contact with old best friend she takes out their friendship necklace and she is reminded of the time when they used be bestfriend and had fun together and then she is zoning out thinking about how they fought and it all ended.along with we had to shoot the end scene where the main character gets up and throws the necklace away to symbolise that she is over it and walks away and the video ends.

> For the transition we took midshot exactly similar to the hallway scene. Then i took many shots when she is sitting in the garden as they required much more stability. as she sits in the corner we took a panning shot. A midshot is taken for when she looks around and takes out the friendship necklace from her bag. we took closeups of the necklace. then a closeup shot of the main charahter as she gets lost in the memories. we also took surrounding long shots when the music continues to show where the character is, then again we take midshot of when she thinks about the fight scene. We took tracking shot when she leaves the garden and closeup as she throws the necklace. we took a continued shot without any cuts when she walks away after throwing the necklace.

> We wanted to film the fight scene at school aswell bur we were too tired as we took many retakes and different shots since we did not have the energy so we decided to reschedule the fight scene on the same day when we will shoot flashbacks.

Location 2 kachnar park i8 islamabad  (20 jan 2025)

EXTERIOR PARK

> We decided to shoot early as every place gets crowded at day time or later so it gets difficult to film. my partner aisha and i arrived on time at 10 am however the shoot got an hour delayed as our main lead didn't show up time, this gave us extra time so we practiced on how we will shoot and we set the camera settings.

> This day we saved much time since we got ready from home. we shot the flasback part using the camera as it gave a better effect for flashbacks as phones showed too much realistic effect the camera made it look vibrant and dreamier.

> For flashbacks we did not have any decided set shots and just decided to take shots that suit the scene best. we took multiple midshots, long shots, camera panning, tracking and more. since it was a cloudy day we stuggled to get the perfect shots.this day i couldnt at all check how the shots were turning out as i had to act in all the scenes.it took us around 2 hours to complete flashback part and then we decided to move to the next location where we had to shoot the fight scene.

Location 3 lit restaurant i8 islamabad ( 20 jan 2025)

EXTERIOR RESTAURANT

> As we reached our next location the main lead and I changed into our outfits for the fight scene and refreshed our makeup and hair. since it was getting closer to lunch time it was getting a little crowded. It only took us an hour to shoot the fight scene as it was very small.
After the filming of the the scene we took photos for the digipack's album covers etc.

> we took over the shoulder shots of both characters to take each of their expressions.
> we decide to packup after the digi pack photoshoot and our actress left as she had to go somewhere else.I went with aisha to her house after the shoot and we reviewed the shots we take and relaxed oursleves.
